Scott MacFarlane’s Departure from CBS News

Scott MacFarlane, a high-profile CBS News Justice Department correspondent, announced on Monday that he is leaving the network by his own decision after five years. His departure follows Paramount’s acquisition of CBS News and the arrival of new editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, prompting concerns among journalists about the network’s direction.

MacFarlane covered Congress and major events, including the July 2024 assassination attempt that targeted former President Trump, becoming one of the network’s most visible reporters. In his email to colleagues, MacFarlane expressed his pride in having the title of ‘CBS correspondent’ and his desire to find new spaces to share his work in line with his personal goals.

Concerns over Changes at CBS News

MacFarlane’s departure is the first significant name to leave CBS News since parent company Paramount won its bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery on February 27. CBS News is likely to be combined with Warner Bros. Discovery’s CNN if the deal gets regulatory approval.

Journalists at CBS News have also been concerned over the moves by Bari Weiss, the contrarian opinion writer and founder of the digital news site the Free Press, who was brought in as editor-in-chief of the division. Weiss was recruited by Paramount Chief Executive David Ellison with a mandate to move CBS News to the political center, and is expected to make significant changes to ’60 Minutes’ and other CBS News programs in the coming months.

Reasons Behind MacFarlane’s Departure

People familiar with MacFarlane’s thinking, who were not authorized to comment publicly, said the veteran journalist was unhappy with the network’s handling of the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters who sought to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil briefly reported on the anniversary by presenting it as a difference of opinion between Trump and Democratic leaders in Congress.

MacFarlane also faced personal threats from MAGA supporters unhappy with his coverage of the Justice Department’s handling of the 1,600 federal cases brought against the participants in the Capitol siege, the largest criminal prosecution in history. He was in Butler, Pennsylvania, during the assassination attempt of President Trump in July 2024 and reported the first accounts of the shooting scene and emergency responses moments after the shots were fired.

MacFarlane’s Career and Future Plans

Before arriving at CBS News, MacFarlane served for eight years as an investigative reporter for WRC-TV, the NBC station in Washington, D.C. His departure from CBS News is seen as the first of many, as executives at other TV news organizations say privately that they are seeing a heavy influx of resumes from the network’s journalists due to the upheaval at the company.

MacFarlane’s decision to leave CBS News is his own, and he expressed his desire to find new spaces to share his work in line with his personal goals. As the network undergoes significant changes under the leadership of Bari Weiss, more departures from CBS News are expected in the coming months.
